Business Closures and Exemptions: Guidance on MN Executive Orders

City Officials have received numerous questions about the Governor’s Stay at Home Executive Orders and how they impact local businesses. This page discusses closures and exemptions.

Business Closures

Beginning Monday, May 18, 2020, businesses that are classified as non-critical are allowed to reopen. Please refer to the State of Minnesota’s requirements and guidance for reopening. Click here to get started.

Beginning Monday, June 1, 2020, businesses that are places of public accommodation such as bars, restaurants, gyms, salons, amusement parks, etc, may reopen in a limited capacity.

Please review guidance from MN DEED to determine whether your business classification is deemed “critical” and if it is not, then you may not remain open

Want to learn more about reopening safely? Click here.

Please contact City Staff with questions about whether your business needs to be closed, whether you can reopen, and how to do so safely.

Applying for Exemptions

Businesses looking for an exemption are encouraged to visit the MN DEED site to assess whether they are able to apply and how they may do so.

Those with questions are encouraged to ask City Staff for help by emailing Nathan Fuerst, Economic Development Specialist.

Businesses Still Open

Businesses that have been allowed to continue operation are restaurants and bars that serve food (curbside and take-out only), health service providers, liquor stores, and financial institutions including insurance & investments.

We recognize the shut down has created significant hardship for businesses not deemed “critical”. Although our City is not creating Executive Orders, we do need to ensure businesses are following them.

Again, this temporary business shut down is effective through May 18.  The City will communicate promptly with our community as the timeline is adjusted.

Please follow our Governor’s Executive Orders regarding business shut downs to do your part in slowing the spread of the COVID-19 virus during this pandemic.  We would also like to encourage our residents to continue supporting those businesses remaining open.  If you have any questions, please feel free to email or call myself, the City Administrator or our City Planners.

Thank you,

Tom Nikunen, City Administrator
