Drinking Water Quality
The City of Jordan Public Works Department is dedicated to providing our residents with safe, high-quality drinking water every day. We are committed to transparency, proactive maintenance, and responsive customer service to ensure your water meets or exceeds all state and federal standards.
Regular Testing and Annual Drinking Water Reports
To maintain the highest standards, the City of Jordan regularly tests drinking water throughout our system. These tests check for a variety of possible contaminants and ensure that water is safe for you and your family. Each year, the City publishes a comprehensive Drinking Water Report for the year prior, which details testing results, any detected substances, and explanations of our water quality. These reports are available to all residents and demonstrate our ongoing commitment to transparency and accountability.
Understanding Cloudy or Brownish Water
Occasionally, you may notice that your tap water appears cloudy or has a brownish tint. This is a common concern and can be caused by harmless minerals, such as iron or manganese, naturally present in our water supply. Changes in water flow—like construction work, hydrant use, or routine system maintenance—can stir these minerals and temporarily impact water clarity.
Cloudy or discolored water can also result from issues within your home, such as aging pipes, recent plumbing repairs, or the use of household appliances like water heaters or washing machines. These situations are typically short-lived and are not a sign of unsafe water.
Is Cloudy Water Safe?
We understand that cloudy or discolored water can be concerning. In most cases, these changes are cosmetic and do not indicate a safety issue. Our ongoing testing ensures that your water remains safe to drink and use. If you ever have concerns, please reach out to us—your feedback helps us maintain a high standard of service.
City Actions: Hydrant Flushing
Each year, the Public Works Department conducts fire hydrant flushing throughout Jordan to help keep our water system clean and clear. This process removes sediment and minerals from our pipes, but it can sometimes cause temporary water discoloration or cloudiness in nearby homes. If you notice these changes during flushing (typically announced in advance), rest assured they are expected and will clear up soon.
What Residents Can Do
· Report Concerns: If you experience persistent cloudy or brownish water, please contact the Public Works Department so we can investigate and address the issue promptly.

· Online Form: Visit the City of Jordan website and submit a service request.
Flush Your System: To help clear cloudy water in your home, first run water from the outside if possible and if clear, run cold water from a faucet (preferably a bathtub or basement sink) for 10–15 minutes. If water remains discolored, wait 30 minutes and try flushing again. Avoid using hot water until the cold water runs clear to prevent drawing minerals into your water heater.
Check Appliances: Occasionally, appliances like water heaters or softeners can contribute to cloudiness. Review manufacturer guidance or consult a plumber if the issue persists.
Stay Informed and Involved
We encourage all residents to stay informed about their water quality. Annual Drinking Water Reports are available on the City of Jordan website, and updates are posted regularly regarding system maintenance and hydrant flushing schedules. Your feedback is valuable—please contact us with questions, concerns, or suggestions. Together, we can ensure Jordan’s water remains safe and reliable for everyone.
Thank you for helping us keep Jordan’s water clean and safe!
